Max Matza reports: An Amazon Air cargo plane overshot the runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport, killing five people and seriously injuring five others. The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft crashed just before 14:00 local time (19:00 GMT) after departing from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The flight also hit several vehicles on the ground.
Amazon said it is working closely with local authorities to understand what happened. All flights were grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as fire crews raced to the crash site. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reported at least five deaths and five injuries, with three critically injured.
Rescue crews arrived within seconds. The crash occurred during Labor Day weekend, a peak travel time. The plane overran Miami International Airport's diagonal runway and was disabled at the northwest end.
Over 200 firefighters responded, extinguishing flames but leaving a fuel leak. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause. Flight data shows the plane was traveling at 112 knots as it exited the runway, near a parking lot servicing an Amazon warehouse.
Weather conditions included light thunderstorms and gusting winds.
